Author: Lauren Destefano
Synopsis: Wil is the youngest child and only daughter of the King and Queen of Northern Arrod. Her siblings and herself are always trying to make themselves worthy in the eyes of their father, to show him they belong to be a part of the family. At the same time, they know who their father is, a vicious king who is about to start another war. Wil goes through many life changing scenarios during this story — her first, when she realizes she can turn anything living into stone and second, when tragedy hits and she’s forced to leave her family. When she leaves, she meets a cursed prince who has a different theory on her curse and who has his own struggles to deal with. Once they meet, Wil’s life is turned again into one of adventure and self discovery.
Review: This one came in my owlcrate box for the month of November, not only did the cover grab my attention but the storyline did as well. So I did something I don’t normally do with my books that come in my boxes — I read this one immediately. I was not disappointed, I honestly can’t say why I liked this book so much but I’ll try my best.
To start, I really enjoyed Wil, she isn’t arrogant even though she’s come from a lifestyle of kings and queens, she’s just a girl trying to make it in her crazy life. Her brothers, all different in their own way and Loom a cursed prince that just wants to save his kingdom all add different elements to Wil’s story that I really enjoyed. But it was more than that too, I didn’t feel like it was over dramatic with romance and I enjoyed the twist on that to begin with, and I also wasn’t expecting an early death which caught me off guard but made the story pick up and start the story in a direction that I didn’t expect it to take. The ending also left me wanting more (which sadly won’t happen until September 2018).
All in all, The Glass Spare had everything you would want in a Young Adult Fantasy story. It reminded me a little of the Hunger Games, a little of Divergent and a little of the Red Queen but Lauren Destafano still found a way to make it her own. I can’t wait to read what happens to Wil and Loom moving forward!
